Drywall Calculator: How to Estimate Sheets and Cost

5 min read · Drywall

Installing drywall yourself can save thousands of dollars on a home renovation. But ordering the wrong amount wastes time and money. Here's how to calculate drywall sheets accurately.

Drywall Sheet Sizes

Standard drywall sheets are 4 feet wide and come in lengths of 8, 10, or 12 feet. The most common size is 4×8 (32 sq ft). For walls with 9-ft ceilings, 4×9 sheets minimize waste. For ceilings, 4×12 sheets reduce the number of joints.

How to Calculate Drywall Sheets

  1. Calculate total wall area: perimeter of room × ceiling height
  2. Calculate ceiling area: length × width
  3. Subtract door openings (21 sq ft each) and window openings
  4. Divide total area by the square footage of your sheet size
  5. Add 10–15% for waste, cuts, and mistakes

Example: 12×14 Bedroom with 9-ft Ceilings
